Imma lie and say I was gonna do one of these yesterday, but actually I was at a wedding party.
Thought of yesterday- STOP THROWING PACKED SEAFOOD DISH PARTIES TO SHOW YOU HAVE MONEY. I AIN'T LOOKING TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL FOR FOOD POISONING AGAIN.
Anyway. The Daily Breakdown.
-Define 5 terms (with examples when applicable)
-phonemic script five words
-Parse one sentence
The terms:
Homophone- home= same, phone= sound; two or more words with the same pronunciation but different meaning, origins, and/or spelling.
Ex: new and knew
Homonym: homo= same, nym= word; two or more words having the same spelling or pronunciation but different meanings.
Ex: Chip- small electronic piece; small wood piece; fried potato piece
Homograph: homo= same, graph= spelling/writing; two or more words spelled the same but have different pronunciation.
Ex: lead (verb)
lead (noun)
Hyponym: hypo= less, nym= word; used to talk about more specific words that can be found in a broad category.
Ex: Spoon is a hyponym in the category of cutlery
Hypernym: hyper= more; nym= word; used to talk about the broad categories that house more specific words.
Ex: Cutlery is a hypernym housing the word spoon.
**Hyponyms and hypernyms have a semantic relationship, they go together. 💋
thought (noun): /θɔːt/
have (verb)- /hæv/ (strong form); /əv/ or /həv/ (weak form)
would (verb)- /wʊd/ (strong form); /wəd/ or /əd/ (weak form)
mud (noun)- /mʌd/
potato (noun)- /pəˈteɪtəʊ/
Ok, so... I need to work on these vowel sounds. I recognize that would and have have both strong and weak forms. But I fucked up almost all the vowel sounds except for have and would... hahahaa
So... lets review:
i: sheep; field; eagle; beach
I ship; fill; busy; started
**Fun fact: sheep and ship; beach and bitch are minimal pairs. Notice that second language learners will often take a long vowel and make it too short. A lot of beaches become bitches this way. Historical fact.
ʊ good; put; should; would; wood
u: moon; loon; grew; through
e bed; dead; medicate; said
ə about; potato; the; police
**ə is schwa. All three syllable words have one of these fuckers. It's the weak vowel sound.
3: bird; hurt; work; murky
ɔ: door; walk; thought; saw
**ɔ: always loses me. Door and thought do not sound the same to me.
æ have; apple; cat; mat
ʌ up; mud; money; cut
ɑ: spa; car; bath; safari
ɒ not; what; because; hot
**I really struggle with ɒ and ɑ: due to the British accent where the IPA standard comes from.
On to the diphthongs.
Iə ear; here; gear; career
eI train; brain; say; plane
**Again, I really struggle with Iə as they usually sound like i: to me.
ʊə sure; tourist; visual; jury
ɔI point; boy; toy; oil
əʊ go; low; coat; note; poke
**My brain feels numb.
eə hair; mare; careful; there
aI by; lie; fine; high
aʊ now; our; house; shower
This is when it all starts to seem super tedious. The smallest units of sound (phonemes) and how they combine to make words. Woooooooooo...
Now onward to sentence parsing.
If I could, I would ask Bill Gates to adopt me.
